Her voice trembled, “God, I don’t want to fall in love with you. I don’t want a relationship. I don’t know what I want.”
“Me neither, so let’s just enjoy our moment. Okay?”
“Okay.”
We stood holding onto each other for a long while. In looking back, not knowing it at the time, it was at that moment I fell in love with her. We let go of each other, only after we were getting too tired to hang on any longer.
It was late so we each ate a Power Bar and got ready for bed. We crawled into our sleeping bags and she grabbed my face and kissed me long and hard, “Please don’t hurt me.”
“I could never hurt you,” as I kissed her forehead.
“You might when you know more about me — ”
I lay awake, hearing her breathing deepen into sleep. What did she mean ‘know more about me’? What was that about?
