Excerpt: Sunset in Paris

Here’s an excerpt from San Juan Sunrise. I’ll be posting more soon. Stay tuned.

Jenny reached over and pulled a large butcher knife from the knife block and went for him. “Get your pig fucking ass out of here now or, I swear I’ll cut your heart out.”

Chris saw something in her eyes that he had never seen. He held up both hands. “Hey, fuck you! I’m gone. Go to hell.” He backed carefully out the door, ran to his truck and left.

Jenny stood there, shaking. The knife fell to the floor. She let out a primal scream from deep within her soul. She stood like that for  a long time. Suddenly, something flashed and she knew what to do. She grabbed her cell phone and looked up locksmiths and found one on the north end of Durango. She called and was answered immediately.

“Franks Lock and Key.”

“Hi, I need some locks re-keyed. How soon can you be here?”

“Monday at the earliest. Where are you located?”

“It can’t wait until Monday. I need them done now.”

“But I have other calls I’m heading out to.”

“What’s your rate? I’ll double, no triple it, if you get here right away.”

“What? Really? Okay, Lady. Where’re you located?”

Jenny gave him the address and directions. He would be there inside a half an hour.

She then called the alarm company that had installed an alarm system for Will back when he had traveled a lot. She had deactivated the service when she bought the place and now had it reactivated.

She then went into the bedroom and stripped all the linens hauling them out to a burn pile area where they would burn tree branches and other  vegetation and debris. She then struggled getting the  mattress out onto the pile followed by the box springs. She then called the fire department letting them know she was doing a burn. She got a can of gas that was used for their garden tractor and poured it onto the bedding. She lit a crumbled piece of paper and tossed it on. There was a huge ‘whump’ and it all went up in hot flames, quickly reducing the pile to ashes.

She turned and saw Frank the locksmith standing there, wide eyed,  with his tool box. “Nice fire. Burning the bed, eh?”

Sunset in Paris review

Reviewed by Rabia Tanveer for Readers’ Favorite

Sunset in Paris by Ed Lehner follows Jennifer Morse, an author trying to move on. A successful writer, Jennifer spends the majority of her time on book tours. While thriving professionally, Jennifer is struggling in her personal life. Her health declines, and her relationship with Chris fizzles out when he cheats on her. Looking for a fresh start, Jennifer travels to Paris to stay with her grandparents, and things change for the better. On a trip to Monte Carlo, she meets Jean Luc Bonnet. The racecar driver makes her feel loved again, but she isn’t ready for a relationship just yet. Hiding from the demons of her past, Jennifer decides to return to the USA and goes on a road trip to find herself. However, nothing could have prepared Jennifer for the secrets she discovered. Will this help Jennifer find herself? Or will she lose herself once again?

Author Ed Lehner made sure his readers were immersed in the story from the get-go. Jennifer is a relatable protagonist whose struggles feel real. I felt a connection with her that I could not explain. She was tired of her fast-paced life, heartbroken, and had no idea what she should do to fix the issues she was facing. The journey to Paris, Monte Carlo, California, and then back to Paris was handled exceptionally well. Nothing felt rushed or dragged. The descriptions were fantastic, the setting was realistic, and Jennifer’s character development was perfect. I could not have asked for a better audiobook. Sunset in Paris comes highly recommended!

The Virtual Voice by Audible was a great narrator. While I prefer voice actor narrations, the voice chosen is not robotic and actually captures Jennifer’s essence. I loved how soft the voice was and created a calm space where I could focus on Jennifer’s journey without any roadblocks. It helped me enjoy Jennifer’s progress and feel like a part of her story.

Greetings

After a long hiatus due to some nasty health issues. I got covid in winter 2023 which turned into long covid which ultimately sent me to the hospital for three weeks (July, 2023) with cardio myopathy. I spent most of the following year and until late 2025 regaining my strength and am finally feeling to be more of myself and have the energy to function. All in all, it all left me listless and with no energy. All I wanted to do was sleep. It also drained me of any creativity. All in all, it sucked.

With the help of my health team: cardiologist, doctor, acupuncture, my psychic healer, along with practicing Chi Gong and Tai Chi, I’m not totally better but probably close to 95%.

So, I’m back and wanting promo my last book, Sunset in Paris, a sequel to San Juan Sunrise. I’ll include a promo clip. Please click on it and enjoy. Available in paperback or audio from Amazon. or in paperback from Barnes and Noble.
